DOCTORAL STUDIES

To earn a Doctorate (Promotion) in Sound Studies, students conduct research on their own and present their results in a written thesis and an oral defense. Like in most German universities, no Ph.D. program with regular coursework and assignments is offered. Students are basically left to their own devices and meet with their advisors individually. The Doctorate is granted for work in the field of theory; we can not consider practice-based approaches or work in the realm of artistic research.

To enroll, doctorate students usually need to have completed a Master’s degree with an emphasis on theory. For further information, please get in touch with Prof. Dr. Sabine Sanio and include your academic CV, a list of publications, and an outline of the research project you want to pursue.

Please contact Prof. Dr. Sabine Sanio (sabine.sanio@udk-berlin.de), if you are interested!

You can find the doctoral degree regulations here (an English translation will be available soon).
