Dieses Seminar positioniert sich im Feld des Transformational Design und folgt dem Ansatz Arturo Escobars, Design als relationale und ontologische Praxis zu verstehen. Design gestaltet nicht nur Dinge, sondern bringt Welten hervor. Im Zentrum steht die Idee des Pluriversums, einer Vielheit koexistierender Lebensweisen, die den universalistischen Anspruch westlicher Moderne infrage stellt. Gestaltung wird hier als Eingriff in Gefüge von Abhängigkeiten, Machtverhältnissen und Lebensweisen begriffen.

Ausgehend von Designs for the Pluriverse untersuchen wir, wie Design an der Produktion sozialer und ökologischer Realitäten beteiligt ist und wie es in Richtung Environmental Justice und regenerativer Praktiken verschoben werden kann. Dabei hinterfragen wir Begriffe wie „Ressource“ und öffnen Design hin zu Prozessen, die Extraktivismus und globale Ungleichheiten adressieren. Als Kompass dient der Widerstand von Gemeinschaften im ecuadorianischen Nebelwald. In Auseinandersetzung mit Konzepten wie Buen Vivir (Alberto Acosta) übertragen wir Perspektiven wie die Rechte der Natur und alternative Ökonomien auf urbane Kontexte in Berlin.

Der Kurs ist eine inter- und transdisziplinäre Kooperation mit der Reihe The Roots of Everything- Widerstand und Utopien aus dem Nebelwald die in der Spore Initiative Neukölln stattfindet. Jeder der sechs Akte verbindet Vortrag und Workshop; Studierende übernehmen Patenschaften und verschränken Praxis mit Theorie. Ergänzt wird dies durch Formate mit Maya Minder (Soil Assembly), die Boden als politischen und epistemischen Akteur erfahrbar machen.

Methodisch arbeiten wir u.a. mit Futures Literacy und Design Thinking. Es entstehen „Utopie-Prototypen“, die zusammen mit theoretischen Reflexionen in das E-Toolkit for the Pluriverse einfließen, das als kollektiver Wissensspeicher und Grundlage für konkrete politische Forderungen dient und im Anschluss des Rundgangs veröffentlicht wird.

This seminar is positioned within the field of Transformational Design and follows Arturo Escobar’s approach of understanding design as a relational and ontological practice. Design does not merely shape objects; it brings worlds into being. At the center is the idea of the Pluriverse, a multiplicity of coexisting ways of life that challenges the universalist claims of Western modernity. In this context, design is understood as an intervention into networks of dependencies, power structures, and lifestyles.

Drawing from Designs for the Pluriverse, we will examine how design participates in the production of social and ecological realities and how it can be shifted toward environmental justice and regenerative practices. We will challenge concepts such as „resource“ and open design up to processes that address extractivism and global inequalities. The resistance of communities in the Ecuadorian cloud forest serves as our compass. Engaging with concepts like Buen Vivir (Alberto Acosta), we will translate perspectives such as the Rights of Nature and alternative economies into urban contexts in Berlin.

The course is an inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration with the series The Roots of Everything: Resistance and Utopias from the Cloud Forest, held at the Spore Initiative in Neukölln. Each of the six „acts“ combines a lecture and a workshop; students will take on mentorship roles and intertwine practice with theory. This is complemented by formats with Maya Minder (Soil Assembly) that make soil tangible as a political and epistemic actor.

Methodology: We work with Futures Literacy and Design Thinking, among other methods. The outcomes will be „Utopia Prototypes“ and theoretical reflections, which will be integrated into the E-Toolkit for the Pluriverse. This toolkit serves as a collective knowledge repository and a foundation for concrete political demands, to be published following the Rundgang exhibition.
