We all have them. The dog walk at six, the skincare regimen, the coffee before anything else, the workout, the way we tidy a desk before we can think. Routines are the small, repeated actions that structure our days and, over time, our lives. We rarely look at them closely. This course is where we do. A routine can be chosen, imposed, or somewhere in between, and that's one of the first things we leave open rather than settle. We investigate contemplatively, not critically. Each participant picks one and stays with it for the semester. We meet weekly to read a handful of texts on habit and attention against our own material. Partway through, we trade: for a few weeks, everyone adds someone else's routine to their own, running both side by side. The one you already have needs no thought at all; the borrowed one takes real attention, because your body hasn't learned it yet. We try things out in the room throughout the semester, and by the end, each participant shows a finished piece built from that work. The course is built for people from any discipline. Our different practices and ways of seeing are the material we work with.

Leistungsanforderungen für den unbenoteten Schein / Fulfilment criteria for ungraded accreditation: regular and active participation, logging one chosen routine across the semester, hosting one session with a reading, and presenting the result of that work at the end of the semester.

Vincent Hulme is an artist and educator based in Berlin. He studied Fine Art at the Universität der Künste Berlin in the Klasse of Josephine Pryde (Meisterschüler, 2020–2023), with a study year at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (2022). His work has been shown in exhibitions across Berlin, Paris, New York, and elsewhere. Since 2019 he has founded and led the Common Ground Studio (CGS) at the UdK — a student-initiated peer-mentorship program supporting Artists at Risk in connecting with the university. Over six years the CGS has worked with more than 70 participants across 12 Fachklassen, developing formats for embedded learning, collective exhibition-making, and peer-led knowledge exchange. The CGS was nominated for the Berlin State Prize for Excellent University Teaching in 2026 and received the DAAD-Preis of the UdK Berlin in 2025. Hulme has additional teaching experience at secondary level in Berlin and has tutored within Klasse Pryde at the UdK. He currently works at the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD.
