Why might we take play seriously?
What does playfulness feel like?
What does it mean to work ‘in parallel’?
How can play contribute to our creative practice?

Parallel Play is a workshop about finding joy in connections – in the broadest of senses. We will consider not just what we create, but HOW we create. Through playful exercises, reflection and discussion, we will seek to break down the  barriers to being creative. Play, playfulness and our ‘playground’ will be central to our exploration. We will look at the terms ‘in play’ and ‘in parallel’ and question what it means to work solo and collectively – and perhaps reframe the distinction. Drawing on principles of artistic and design research, we will consider a conscious approach to creating. We will be trying out a broad range of hands-on exercises; finding inspiration in creative approaches across media and disciplines; reflecting on our own practice, both independently and collectively; and discussing ideas which open up bigger questions. We will develop a ‘manifesto’ for our practice.

It’s important to us that a workshop about play is playful! There will be an emphasis on the process (more than the outcome) and just giving things a go. If you sometimes feel stuck at the beginning of a project and want to try out some new strategies and approaches to getting started, we hope that this might be the course for you.
