Session III: Introduction to Quantum Computing with Quantum Computer Music (with DESY)
The third session of the seminar “Quantum Futures – Designing the Futures of Quantum Technologies”, is organized in collaboration with Alice Di Tucci and Paulo Itaborai from DESY's Center for Quantum Technologies and Applications (CQTA).
Alice Di Tucci is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Quantum Technologies and Applications of DESY. A physicist by training, her current work focuses on quantum algorithms and their use in machine learning, particle physics and optimization.
Paulo Itaborai (Itaborapuy) is an artist-researcher, computational physicist and music technologist. He is currently a PhD researcher at CQTA DESY on quantum algorithms for simulation and quantum error mitigation. He has experience in working with electroacoustic and contemporary music, and is a pioneering researcher in Quantum Computer Music, being one of the core organizers of the main conference on the topic (ISQCMC) https://isqcmc.org. His work has been used in musical performances with the London Sinfonietta, Theatro São Pedro Orchestra, in the CTM Festival and Ars Electronica, among others.
The session will cover the current developments in Quantum Computer Music which are presented in an interactive way. It will start with an introduction to quantum computing and quantum algorithms and will introduce foundational concepts such as qubits, quantum operations, circuits, and measurements. These concepts will be illustrated through the sonification and musification of quantum data, presented through interactive applications that already introduce some ideas on how artists can use quantum circuits in their artwork, and how they can contribute to the technology itself. The session will conclude with a provocational seminar on concepts, motivations and state-of-the-art of quantum computing in music and multimedia performing arts.
