ATTENTION PLEASE: Saturday, 25.11. the seminar starts at 12 h in room 004, around 15 h the seminar group will move to Kunstquartier Bethanien to attend the TERROR FEEDS conference.

What are “internet trolls“ and how do they influence politics? What do viral “memes” of adorable cats have to do with genetics and Nietzsche? What was “#Gamergate” and what did it have against feminism? Can “spambots“ be racist? Can algorithms vote? Can avatars be living breathing humans and if so, what happens to them when we delete them? And most importantly, are we really going through a new crisis of “Post-Truth” just because we repost everything we think is true?
This block seminar offers both an introduction and critical approach to these and other concepts in today's social media landscape and the significant role they play in the exchange between culture and politics. It is especially intended for students who seek a more proper understanding of the effects of these concepts on contemporary art and media discourses. To better grasp the context and influence of these phenomena, we will explore relevant texts and films ranging from media and art theory to zoology, philosophy, investigative journalism and science fiction.

Leistungsanforderungen für den unbenoteten Studium-Generale-Schein: Participants will be asked to do a small assignment, a text or film review. Full attendance and participation in the discussions is the most important.

Gabriel S Moses, 1982, Jerusalem, is a Berlin based media artist, performer and a published essayist and graphic novelist. He holds a Masters degree from the Institute for Art in Context (UdK Berlin, 2016). He recently concluded his residency project at Hangar.org (Barcelona) which was also showcased in HfG-ZKM (Karlsruhe) and in Print Screen Festival (Israel). Other showcases include Lenbachhaus, Kunstquartier Bethanien, ID Festival, FILE Festival (Sao Paulo), Coventry (UK), Leuphana University and Transmediale.
