Metamorphoses

Metamorphoses challenges the existing human-animal dualism and the categorisation of non-human beings.
It offers a new perspective on transformation and overcoming boundaries. The questions at the beginning of the workshop, such as „Which animal would you like to be?“ or „Which animal scares you?“ were used as a hook to take a closer look at specific animal. The answers included encounters and short stories that were decisive in selecting the animals to be portrayed in the masks. In retrospect, these questions and answers also reflect the ways in which humans think about animals. We categorize animals as cute, beautiful, disgusting, scary or exciting. In doing so, WE always adopt a position towards THEM.
During the process of crafting, we asked ourselves: “Where do we draw the line between human and non-human creatures?” Is there an objective representation of animals or is it always subjective? The works show an associative translation of hybrid creatures that raise questions about an objectified animal body. The wearable masks blur the boundary between human and animal, changing the perspective from the outside to the inside.
