Gender theory proposes that masculinity and femininity should be viewed as sets of created characteristics that shape the lives of men and women. It replaces the outdated idea that masculinity and femininity are fixed by biological determinants, and also seeks to separate gender from sex. Binary gender roles are dictated by society, this leading to many people not feeling represented by them. The exclusivity of binary gender roles causes nonbinary people to create their own gender. This encyclopedia lays out a selection of 381 nonbinary gender roles currently in use. It visualizes the immense variety of flags and colors found within the confines of gender and calls the necessity of fixed gender roles into question.
