Towards Radical Regeneration

Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2022

Springer Verlag 2022, 619 Seiten [Gebundene Ausgabe]

This book reflects and expands on the current trends in the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries to respond to the unfolding climate and biodiversity crisis. Shifting away from the traditional focus, narrowly centered on efficiency, this book presents a variety of approaches to move the AEC community from an approach that presents new challenges in all areas of the industry, from a linear, extractive paradigm to circular and regenerative one. The book presents contributions including research papers and case studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science, biology and material science.

The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 8th Design Modelling Symposium “Towards Radical Regeneration”, which took place at the University of the Arts in Berlin in September 2022.

Impact: Design With All Senses

Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2019

Springer Verlag 2019, 793 Seiten [Gebundene Ausgabe]

This book reflects and expands on the current trend in the building industry to understand, simulate and ultimately design buildings by taking into consideration the interlinked elements and forces that act on them. Shifting away from the traditional focus, which was exclusively on building tasks, this approach presents new challenges in all areas of the industry, from material and structural to the urban scale. The book presents contributions including research papers and case studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science.

The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 7th Symposium “Impact: Design With All Senses”, which took place at the University of the Arts in Berlin in September 2019.

Rethink!Prototyping

Transdisciplinary Concepts of Prototyping

Springer Verlag, 240 Seiten [Gebundene Ausgabe]

In this book, the authors describe the findings derived from interaction and cooperation between scientific actors employing diverse practices. They reflect on distinct prototyping concepts and examine the transformation of development culture in their fusion to hybrid approaches and solutions.

The products of tomorrow are going to be multifunctional, interactive systems – and already are to some degree today. Collaboration across multiple disciplines is the only way to grasp their complexity in design concepts. This underscores the importance of reconsidering the prototyping process for the development of these systems, particularly in transdisciplinary research teams.

“Rethinking Prototyping – new hybrid concepts for prototyping” was a transdisciplinary project that took up this challenge. The aim of this programmatic rethinking was to come up with a general concept of prototyping by combining innovative prototyping concepts, which had been researched and developed in three sub-projects: “Hybrid Prototyping” developed new prototyping approaches to validate and evaluate holistically developed systems with their services, infrastructure and business models. “Blended Prototyping” addressed a new technique whereby prototypes for user interfaces of software applications can be generated from hand drawings and immediately be tested. “Beyond Prototyping” examined the issue of the prototype in connection with algorithmically generated design for producing tailor-made products.

This book is the result of three years of intensive research work on prototyping. The cooperating fields and departments shared a scientific interest in both new approaches to development processes and a collective understanding of prototyping. The project called “Rethinking Prototyping—New Hybrid Concepts for Prototyping” brought together fields that often differ greatly in terms of their methodology, terminology and hypotheses or even partially contradict each other: the engineering disciplines at Technische Universität Berlin and the artistic design disciplines at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Modelling Behaviour

Design Modelling Symposium 2015

Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015, [Hard-Back]

This book reflects and expands on the current trend in the building industry to understand, simulate and ultimately design building by taking into consideration the interlinked elements and forces that act on them. This approach overcomes the traditional, exclusive focus on building tasks, while posing new challenges in all areas of the industry from material and structural to the urban scale. Contributions from invited experts, papers and case studies provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the field, as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science.

The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 5th Symposium "Modelling Behaviour", which took place at the CITA in Copenhagen in September 2015.

Rethinking Prototyping

Proceedings of the Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013

Design modelling has benefited from computation but in most projects to date there is still a strong division between computational design and simulation leading up to construction and the completed building that is cut off from the computational design modelling. The Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013 would like to challenge the participants to reflect on the possibility of computational systems that bridge design phase and occupancy of buildings. This rethinking of the designed artifact beyond its physical has had profound effects on other industries already. How does it affect architecture and engineering? At the scale of engineering and building systems new perspectives may open up by engaging built form as a continuous prototype, which can track and respond during use and serve as a real world implementation of its design model. This has been tried many times from intelligent façades to smart homes and networked grids but much of it was only technology driven and not approached from a more holistic design perspective.

This book publishes the proceeding of the 4th Design Modelling Symposium Berlin. The volume presenting 48 peer- reviewed and accepted papers from 103 authors.

Computational Design Modeling

Proceedings of the Design Modeling Symposium Berlin 2011

Springer- Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011, [Hard-Back]

This book publishes the peer-reviewed proceeding of the third Design Modeling Symposium Berlin. The conference constitutes a platform for dialogue on experimental practice and research within the field of computationally informed architectural design. More than 60 leading experts the computational processes within the field of computationally informed architectural design to develop a broader and less exotic building practice that bears more subtle but powerful traces of the complex tool set and approaches we have developed and studied over recent years. The outcome are new strategies for a reasonable and innovative implementation of digital potential truly innovative and radical design guided by both responsibility towards processes and the consequences they initiate.
