Das Masterstudio „Umbau oder Abbau Aufbau“ beschäftigt sich mit der Frage wie Berlin in Zeiten des zunehmenden Klimanotstandes überhaupt noch weitergebaut werden kann. Zum einen verursacht die Baubranche durch den Abriss von Gebäuden einen Großteil des in Deutschland anfallenden Abfalls und stößt durch Neubau einen Großteil der CO2-Emissionen aus, zum anderen werden dringend neue Wohnungen gebraucht. Die Studierenden bearbeiteten drei Grundstücke in Charlottenburg, Friedenau und Neukölln auf denen sich Bestandswohngebäude aus den 1960-80er Jahren befinden und zudem auch große Freiflächen, die zurzeit noch als Parkplätze genutzt werden. Für jedes Grundstück sollten zwei entgegengesetzte Konzepte entwickelt werden: 1. Umbau des Bestands und Neubau auf Freiflächen; und 2. Rückbau des Bestands und Neubau unter Wiederverwendung der rückgebauten Stahlbeton- und Mauerwerkssubstanz. Neben der intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem Bestand wurden im Entwurfsprozess Themen wie Städtebau, Dichte und Wohnformen, aber auch Baukonstruktion, statische Konzepte und Ökobilanz untersucht und diskutiert. Es entstanden fünf unterschiedliche Konzepte für das Weiterbauen der Stadt, die als Alternativen zum aktuellen Status quo von Abriss und Ersatzneubau vorgestellt werden können.

The Master Studio "Modification or Deconstruction Reconstruction" deals with the question of how Berlin can continue to build at all in times of increasing climate emergency. On the one hand, the construction industry causes a large part of the waste produced in Germany through the demolition of buildings and emits a large part of the CO2 emissions through new construction; on the other hand, new flats are urgently needed. The students worked on three plots in Charlottenburg, Friedenau and Neukölln on which there are existing residential buildings from the 1960-80s and also large open spaces that are currently used as car parks. Two opposing concepts were to be developed for each site: 1. modification of the existing buildings and new construction on free areas, and 2. deconstruction of the existing buildings and new construction with reuse of the deconstructed reinforced concrete and bricks. In addition to the intensive study of the existing buildings, topics such as urban development, density and living concepts, but also building construction, static concepts and Life Cycle Assessment were examined and discussed in the design process. Five different concepts for the further development of the city were developped, which can be presented as alternatives to the current status quo of demolition and replacing new construction.
